Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is set to join West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan, with the move expected to be finalised imminently. The 21-year-old, a product of Brighton’s youth academy, made 13 first-team appearances for United last season and was part of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

With competition for midfield places intensifying under manager Ruben Amorim, and no European fixtures on United’s schedule for the 2025/26 campaign, the club believes a temporary switch will provide Collyer with valuable game time. The decision follows interest from several clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, but West Brom has emerged as the preferred destination.
Collyer joined United in 2022, quickly progressing from the U18 side to the U21s before earning a senior squad promotion last summer. He made his debut against Manchester City in the Community Shield and gained increased minutes during an injury crisis midway through last season. His combative style and tactical discipline briefly saw him move ahead of Casemiro in the pecking order, although the Brazilian reclaimed his place towards the end of the campaign.
Currently, United’s central midfield options include Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte, leaving Collyer as a fifth-choice option. Fernandes is expected to operate in a deeper role this term following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, further limiting opportunities for the Worthing-born player.
A loan move is seen as beneficial for both parties: Collyer will gain consistent playing time in the Championship, while United can monitor his development without permanently losing a promising asset. Although there had been some discussion over a potential permanent transfer, a loan has ultimately been deemed the most suitable route.
United’s midfield situation could yet change before the transfer window closes, with the club linked to Atalanta’s Ederson, Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand, and Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz. However, those targets would require significant transfer fees, and Collyer’s departure will not generate funds for incoming signings.
Collyer’s move to West Brom is expected to be confirmed in the coming days, with the midfielder set to play a key role in Carlos Corberán’s side as they target a strong Championship campaign.
