Chelsea Make Incredible Gesture Towards Diogo Jota’s Family Ahead of Premier League Season Opener

Abhinav Goel

The football world is still reeling from the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. The two brothers have left behind a void that can never truly be filled. Jota died in a car crash on July 3 along with his brother Andre. As the Premier League prepares to kick off, Chelsea have shown a touch of class that goes beyond football.

In a sport often dominated by fierce rivalries, the Blues have chosen to make a heartwarming gesture that speaks volumes about respect, unity and the human side of football. Fresh from their Club World Cup triumph over PSG in the United States, Chelsea will reportedly donate part of its FIFA World Cup bonus to the family of Diogo Jota.

Chelsea earned an estimated £84.4m from their tournament win, with £11.4m allocated to player bonuses. Each squad member will receive around £368,000 and in an incredible gesture, Chelsea’s hierarchy and players agreed that the same amount would be sent to Jota’s family. This brings the donation to roughly $500,000 (£368,184).

Liverpool’s Tributes for Diogo Jota

Liverpool, meanwhile, will honour Jota’s memory throughout the season. When the Reds open their campaign against Bournemouth on 15 August, the Reds will wear a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts and jackets. Fans will create a mosaic in the stands and a minute’s silence will be observed before kick-off. The club has also retired the No. 20 shirt and plans to install a permanent memorial sculpture at Anfield.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, Jota made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals for the Reds. The versatile forward quickly established himself as a fan favourite due to his dedication and relentless effort on the pitch. The Merseyside club will also honour the remainder of Jota’s contract by paying it out in full to his family. Notably, Jota’s contract was set to run until 2027 before his tragic death.
