“There’s Really No Greater Honor” – Josh Allen on the Opportunity to play on the Olympic Flag Football Team

Devavrat Kulkarni

Flag football at the Olympics has many in the NFL excited!

The reigning NFL MVP is back at the training facilities in Buffalo for the team’s OTAs this week. Last year, many experts had ruled out the Bills from having a great season with multiple top talents departing in the offseason. However, Allen led from the front, and the Bills ended up going to the AFC Championship Game.

All that is now in the past, and the Bills have a roster capable of going deep into the playoffs once again. Allen would like nothing more than to deliver a Super Bowl for his team, which would be the first-ever in franchise history. But, there is also one more thing he would love to do, and that is to represent his country at the international level.

Allen’s Thoughts on Competing for the National Team at the 2028 Olympics

The star quarterback held a press conference during the Bills OTA session recently and was asked about his thoughts on the league allowing NFL players to be part of the United States Flag Football team at the 2028 Olympics.

Speaking on the topic for the first time after the league’s approval, Allen seemed quite excited at the thought of participating in the Olympics, stating that he is very fond of the event and if an opportunity ever came his way, he would surely love to be a part of it. The Bills’ signal caller also felt that there is no greater honor than to represent the country.

“I’m not gonna disrespect the guys that are playing flag football right now, but you know, if there’s an opportunity for me to try, I would absolutely love to. I’ve always wanted to compete for my country, and, you know, every time the Olympics are on, I’m tuned in and glued to the screen, but I think there’s really no greater honor to do that. That’d be really cool.”

Flag Football at the 2028 Olympics

Flag football as a sport will make its debut at the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles. Flag football is a version of American football but without all the protective equipment, as players are not allowed to tackle each other.

The sport was one of many other sports added to the events at the 2028 Olympics in L.A., including T20 cricket, lacrosse (sixes), baseball/softball, and squash. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and the NFL played a crucial role in getting the nod of approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in October 2023.

However, a vote by the NFL owners to allow their players to participate in the flag football event at the 2028 Olympics was passed only recently when all franchise owners convened for the NFL’s annual spring meeting held in Minnesota on May 20, 2025.

Both of the United States teams, men’s and women’s teams, are ranked number one in flag football currently. And, now that NFL players are also permitted to participate, the United States looks to be the clear frontrunners to bring home the Gold medals.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
