The American has been dealing with abdominal issues this year.
No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz is back at the Mutua Madrid Open, and begins his quest for the trophy against a familiar Australian foe in Christopher O’Connell on Friday. While the top ranked American received a bye in Round-1, his opponent had to wrestle his way past Camilo Ugo of Argentina to seal his position in the second round at the Spanish capital.
Unlike several other players, Taylor Fritz is starting his clay court campaign relatively late. The World No. 4 played his last event at the Miami Open – where he lost to eventual champion Jakub Mensik in a thrilling semifinal. Fritz also fell short in Dallas and Indian Wells against players who went on to capture the trophy. Last year, he reached the last four at La Caja Magica, losing again to the current defending champion Andrey Rublev.
Unfortunately, the 2025 season has produced more misses than hits for Christopher O’Connell. The Aussie sensation was on the verge of breaking into the Top-50 in late 2023, but currently finds himself staring into the possibility of dropping out of the Top-100 this year. The 30-year-old is 2-5 on clay over the past year. His best performance this year has been a quarterfinal finish in Bucharest.
Taylor Fritz and Christopher O’Connell have faced each other twice so far – the American has a 2-0 record in this head to head.

At this very tournament and this very round in 2023, Fritz and O’Connell played out one of the best tiebreakers of the season. The reigning US Open finalist narrowly escaped with a 13-11 score line in the opener, before winning in straight sets. A year later at Wimbledon 2024, O’Connell attempted to even the odds in the first round. However, he was no match for Fritz on a surface that suits his playing style.

In terms of serving prowess and groundstroke accuracy on clay, Fritz clearly has the edge. The 27-year-old has a 12-5 record on the dirt over the past year, and wins 84% of his service games on the surface. Although O’Connell has previously stated that his favourite surface is clay and tennis idol is Gaston Gaudio, this match-up could be one-way domination if Fritz’s fitness holds up.
Prediction: Taylor Fritz in straight sets.
