Sparks vs. Storm: Seattle Takes Down Shorthanded Los Angeles With a Blowout Defeat in Final Commissioner’s Cup Matchup

The Storm handed a blowout loss to the shorthanded Sparks on Tuesday.

The Seattle Storm registered their seventh victory of the WNBA 2025 season as they handed a blowout defeat to the Los Angeles Sparks 98-67 on Tuesday, June 17, in the final Commissioner’s Cup matchup. With Kelsey Plum out due to a lower leg injury, the Sparks suffered offensively and could shoot 32% from the field. The Storm, on the other hand, were led by Nneka Ogwumike, who dropped 26 points, five rebounds and two assists.

She was shooting 12-for-16 from the field, 0-for-3 from the three-point arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. With this, Ogwumike surpassed Tina Thompson for the fourth-most field goals in the history of the league. Apart from her, Erica Wheeler and Skylar Diggins dropped 15 points each. Gabby Williams tallied 11 points, four rebounds and seven assists. In addition, she created a new franchise single-game record with eight steals during the game, and fell two steals short of creating a new WNBA record.

Storm Takes Advantage of Sparks’ Shorthanded Roster and Poor Offense

In the beginning, the Sparks had Shey Peddy kicking off the contest with a three pointer as well as Sarah Ashelee Barker came up with a pair of threes to give the Sparks an 11-6 lead. The Storm came up with a 5-0 run and leveled the score. They again went on an 11-2 run and ended the quarter with a 26-19 lead, owing to the scoring prowess of Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins and Erica Wheeler.

The Sparks ended the second quarter on a poor note, similar to the first one. Heavily shorthanded with five players missing the game, they had Stevens converting on an and-one play in the beginning. With their next four points coming from the free-throw line, the Sparks cut their deficit to two points. However, Williams soon came up with a three pointer for the Storm, followed by Jackson’s three-pointer as well as Diggins’ deep shot from the corner. In no time, they were back into the lead by five points.

Heading into halftime, the Storm was leading the Sparks 47-37. In the third period, Ogwumike continued her scoring, and suddenly the Storm were 13 points ahead of their counterparts. While Hamby tried to score for the Sparks, her points couldn’t help much. Seattle was leading by as many as 26 points, while their rivals continued with their struggles. By the end of the third quarter, Sparks were trailing the Storm 75-53. The Storm continued to pile on points in the fourth quarter and eventually took full advantage of Sparks’ ugly offense to register a 98-67 victory.
