Sidney Crosby Climbs to Ninth All-Time in NHL Scoring

Anamika Shrivastava

Penguins' captain continues to solidify his legacy with a historic milestone, moving into the top 10 in all-time NHL points.

It’s a further move towards the Hall of Fame for one of the sport’s finest athletes. During the initial period of a Thursday night matchup with the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby recorded a secondary assist on Drew O’Connor’s goal, extending his team’s lead to 4-1.

It was not only a significant achievement to grant the Penguins a considerable advantage over one of the league’s most talented teams, but it also marked the 1,642nd point of his NHL career, placing him ninth all-time in points. Crosby entered the evening just one point trailing Hockey Hall of Famer and ex-Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic on the all-time scoring leaderboard.

The native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, earned an assist on Bryan Rust’s goal earlier in the first period. He continued by netting a power-play goal in the second period. Crosby’s upcoming goal is to surpass Penguins icon Mario Lemieux, who ranks eighth in history with 1,723 points. That figure is definitely within reach considering Crosby’s productivity in recent seasons.

The 2024-25 season has already been marked by achievements for the three-time Stanley Cup winner. In November, Crosby scored the 600th goal of his renowned career, making him the 21st player in NHL history to achieve this milestone. Recently, he recorded his 1,034th career assist, moving past Lemieux to claim the record for the most assists in franchise history.

At 37 years old, Crosby still demonstrates that he is among the top players in the NHL. The two-time Hart Trophy recipient has been part of the MVP discussion for the past few years due to his efforts in pushing the Penguins toward the playoffs, or at least into the playoff dialogue.

Watching the action unfold and turning it into something fans can connect with. To my readers: Hockey is more than just a game—it’s the highs, the heartbreaks, and the moments that make us jump off our seats. So, keep cheering, keep debating, and never stop loving the madness of the sport!
