It is nearly time for the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, and what a talented group of new young players we have ready to enter the professional fold of ice hockey. This year’s draft, which is set to take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on June 27 and 28, is expected to be another exciting event.

As several draft prospects await their name to be called, Canadian hockey player Roger McQueen will be among the top candidates at the draft. Here is a brief look at his weaknesses, strengths, and draft projection.

Roger McQueen Overview

Canadian ice hockey player, Roger McQueen, was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on October 2, 2006, and is currently 18 years old. McQueen is a tall 6-foot-5-inch, 195-pound forward playing mostly at the center position.

The right-hand shooter has played the past four seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings, part of the Western Hockey League (WHL), which is a junior ice hockey league. McQueen missed most of last season due to injury, but still had 20 points, including 10 goals and 10 assists from just 17 games. The previous season, he had 51 points from 53 games, scoring 21 goals, while providing 30 assists.

The top scouting agencies all have him ranked inside the top 10, with NHL Central Scout placing him at the number 8 position amongst all North American skaters.

Roger McQueen Strengths

Despite his big size, McQueen has pretty decent skating ability. His long strides help him get down the ice quickly, and once he gets moving, he can be difficult to stop. As for his shooting abilities, the tall center has a cannon shot as well as great accuracy. He can easily generate power when needed and can slot home the puck on the move with equal precision.

Another strength of his game is his vision. McQueen can find the perfect pass, knowing very well his teammates are positioned, leading to easy development of the play. A high IQ player with excellent shooting and passing skills is the hallmark of a typical forward who can wreak havoc in the league, and Roger McQueen certainly has that caliber.

Roger McQueen Weaknesses

One of his areas of improvement, like many other top players skilled with stick and puck handling, is the unnecessary extra effort put into trying too much when the simpler solution is to look for a pass. This extra effort, at times, to get creative leads to turnovers.

Other than that, the only other thing he can work on getting better at is his explosiveness. Despite generating good speed once he gets into motion, it is the first few steps that slow him down just a little.

Without question, McQueen is one of the more talented players at this year’s draft. Having said that, he did miss plenty of games due to injury last season, so that could be a factor against him. Expected to still be a top ten draft pick, the Buffalo Sabres could be a potential spot at number nine overall.
