On Sunday, 03/16, the Portland Trail Blazers (28-39) will host the Toronto Raptors (24-43) in an inter-conference Regular-Season match-up. The Trail Blazers are stuck at the 12th spot in the West, whereas the Raptors have jumped to the 11th position in the East. Can the struggling Trail Blazers find some relief against a team in a similar trajectory? Read about the preview, total predictions, and player props here.
Trail Blazers: Some promise, but a long way to go
The Portland Trail Blazers will come into this match-up after a gutting 1-point loss against the New York Knicks despite a 30-point performance by Scoot Henderson. Knicks’ Swingman Mikal Bridges hit a game-winning buzzer-beater triple that handed the Blazers their fifth straight loss. To be fair, they have dealt with a tough schedule. Playing against five red-hot teams was always going to be a tough ask. On the other hand, they have been brilliant against teams with fewer than .500 wins, with a 12-7 record against such squads. Overall, they are in a similar territory as Oklahoma City Thunder was a couple of years ago, however, they need someone like Shai-Gilgeous Alexander to lift their franchise.
Expected Starting Lineup
PG/SG: Anfernee Simons | SG: Shaedon Sharpe | SF: Deni Advija | PF: Toumani Camara | C: Donovan Clingan
Key Injuries/Updates: Deanre Ayton is OUT but may return soon. The status of Jerami Grant and Jabari Walker is UNCLEAR.
Raptors: A lot of promise, a solid young core
The Toronto Raptors will come into this affair after an 8-point win against the Utah Jazz behind a 20-point, 10-rebound performance by Scottie Barnes. It was their third straight win and sixth in seven games, and they are 16-12 after a terrible 8-31 start. The young trio of RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes, and Immanuel Quickley has shown a lot of fire, but the team lacks the firepower to compete against elite squads. Will the Raptors build around their promising core that has collected decent experience, or will they use them as trade assets to land a generational talent? Don’t forget they also landed elite isolation scorer Brandon Ingram in the midseaon trade deadline.
Expected Starting Lineup
PG: Immanuel Quickley | SG: RJ Barrett | SF: Scottie Barnes | SF/PF: Jamison Battle | C: Colin Castleton
Key Injuries/Updates: Gradey Dick and Brandon Ingram are OUT at least till third week of March. The status of Ja’Kobe Walter, Jonathan Mogbo, Ochai Agbaji, and Jakob Poeltl is UNCLEAR.
The Raptors have scored in the 114-119 range lately, but most of the performances have come against sub-par defenses. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers managed to score in the 112-118 range even against tough defenses. Defensively, Portland faced a mountain of struggles, conceding 120+ against terrific offensive teams, while the Raptors’ easy schedule helped them dodge such a fate. I believe both teams will come up with a strong two-way performance here, and both teams can be in the 107-112 range here but the total may not cross 225
Projected Predictions:
Scoot Henderson to score over 15.5 points: The sophomore has averaged 16.3 points per game in March thus far, tallying 15 or more in four games. I expect him to be in the 17-21 range here.
Donovan Clinga to clinch over 9.5 rebounds: The Trail Blazers rookie has snatched 9.3 rebounds per game in March. I expect him to be in the 10-13 rebounds range here.
Immanuel Quickley to convert over 2.5 triples: The Raptors sharpshooter has made 3 or more triples just twice in five games. I expect him to be in the 3-4 range here.
RJ Barrett to score over 20.5 points: Barrett has scored 20+ in three of the last five games. I expect him to be in the 22-24 points range here.
The Trail Blazers have the home-court advantage, but they are fighting a five-game skid, which must have impacted their morale. On the other hand, the Raptors are doing well and fancy their chances against the Trail Blazers. However, I see the Trail Blazers’ guard combination rising for a big night and outplaying the Raptors here. I believe they will break their five-game funk by a 5+ points win.
Safe Spread Pick: Trail Blazers -6.5 for -110 at BetMGM

I enjoy this job because it helps keep me in the loop about the game I love while fulfilling the pleasure I derive from stats. I got into NBA writing through social media interactions in the mid-2010s as I shared my takes on young talents such as D’Angelo Russell. I hope you enjoy reading my pieces as much as Dennis Rodman loved rebounding the basketball!
