Manchester City Boss Hints at Major Career Move After Club Exit.

Pep Guardiola has given some surprising news about his future and it has been speculative, to say the least. The Manchester City manager recently confirmed that he will “take a break” from the sport once his time at the Etihad comes to an end. However, he has insisted that he is not retiring just yet.

Guardiola recently told ESPN, “After my contract with City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure. I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break.” The 54-year-old extended his contract just a few months ago last November. This will keep him at City until June 2027.

By 2027, he will have served 11 years in Manchester. This is a tenure which will be longer than his spells at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich combined. However, speculation about his departure timeline may have intensified but he still clarified that his exit isn’t imminent.

Guardiola explained, “I said that when I finish my time here – be it in one, two, three, four, five years – I will take a break. I will need to make a stop, that’s all. I’m not retired, but I will take a break for sure.” Guardiola previously took a sabbatical after leaving Barcelona in 2012. After a year, he took charge of Bayern in 2013.

An Introspective Season

Even with his decorated stint, Guardiola has admitted that this season has been far from smooth. He has won six Premier League titles and a historic treble in 2022–23. City are currently fourth in the league and 21 points behind leaders Liverpool. They are now battling to secure Champions League qualification next season.

Guardiola reflected on the turbulent campaign. Speaking to Sky Sports, he pointed to injury setbacks and missed rotation opportunities as key issues. He said, “I should have found something, but I didn’t. McAtee and Nico O’Riley didn’t play [earlier], and now they’ve proved I was wrong. It’s been a good experience for me.”

City will aim to salvage their season in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on May 17. But Guardiola’s comments have raised questions about what comes next. Doubts are emerging about his future and for the club that he transformed in the last few years. For now, his focus stays on finishing the season at the Premier League top five and winning the FA Cup title.
