The iconic “We Are the Champions” played in the background as he paraded the silverware, drawing cheers from the surprised audience who were still reeling in from the French wildcard Lois Boisson’s stunning win against world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The 22-year-old Boisson, who is ranked 361st, became the lowest-ranked player to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since 2017. She also became the first French wildcard to do so at Roland Garros since 2002. It’s been a remarkable day for the fans present at the arena with one surprise after another.
Dembele’s appearance at the French Open caps off a remarkable season. He was instrumental in PSG’s historic 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final. It was a dominant final for PSG as they secured the club’s first European Cup. Along with that, they completed a continental treble.
