Liverpool Goalkeeper Set To Sign for Brentford

The goalkeeper departs Anfield with an impressive trophy haul: two Premier League titles, a Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and a UEFA Super Cup.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is on the verge of joining Brentford after the two clubs agreed a deal. Kelleher is expected to replace Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who is himself close to sealing a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga side have reportedly agreed to sign the Dutchman for around £8 million.

Brentford have agreed an initial £12.5m deal with Liverpool for Kelleher, with add-ons potentially raising the fee to £18 million. The 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international will undergo his medical on Monday ahead of the move. Despite having a year remaining on his Liverpool contract, Kelleher has opted for a move in search of regular first-team football.

Kelleher’s Time at Liverpool

He was a key target for several clubs, including Leeds, West Ham, and Bournemouth, but Brentford’s strong relationship with Liverpool gave them the edge. The Bees had previously signed Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho from the Reds. Kelleher made 25 Premier League appearances during his five-year senior career at Anfield, along with over 40 cup appearances.

Even as Alisson Becker’s understudy at Anfield this seasom, Kelleher played a valuable role in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign. The Irish goalkeeper made 10 Premier League appearances, stepping up effectively during Alisson’s spells on the sidelines due to injury.

He was the hero in Liverpool’s dramatic 2022 League Cup final victory over Chelsea, saving crucial penalties and scoring one himself in an 11–10 shootout win. He also departs Anfield with an impressive trophy haul: two Premier League titles, a Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and a UEFA Super Cup.

His replacement at Liverpool is set to be Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili. The highly rated Georgian goalkeeper will arrive in July to compete with Alisson Becker for the number one shirt under head coach Arne Slot.

Brentford, meanwhile, are moving quickly to complete their goalkeeper reshuffle, with Flekken’s medical at Leverkusen also scheduled for Monday.
