Novak Djokovic Creates History! Serbian Ace Defeats Hubert Hurkacz in Geneva Open Final to Claim 100th Career Title

Novak Djokovic became only the third player to reach the glorious feat of 100 ATP titles.

24-time major champion, Novak Djokovic created a history in the final of the ATP Geneva Open as the Serbian ace has claimed his 100th career title after beating Hubert Hurkacz in three-set thriller. Following the loss in Shanghai and Miami, Djokovic came from behind to win the final 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2). Djokovic won his 8th game against Hurkacz but it was a great effort from the Hungarian in the final.

With the triumph in Switzerland, Novak Djokovic became only the third player to reach the glorious feat of 100 ATP titles after Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). The 24-time grand slam champion won his first ATP tour title of the season and it would be a game-changer for Djokovic ahead of the Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic Comes From Behind to Win the ATP Geneva Open

Novak Djokovic entered the Geneva Open with a third potential try to claim 100th career title. He lost previous two in Shanghai and Miami this year. Hurkacz had a positive start and won the opening set 7-5. The pressure was on Djokovic and the second set was more challenging for the Serbian ace. He was 5-4 down in second set and was on the verge of facing a defeat. However, Djokovic pulled it back to take the second set in tiebreaker.

Djokovic was in same situation in the semifinals and he held the nerves to cross the line. However, story was quite different in the final as Hurkacz looked in dominant position in final set and won two straight games to take a 4-2 lead.

Djokovic, who had 31-11 record in the deciding sets of finals, came back and won three straight games to earn one game point. The twist in the story was still left and Hurkacz pushed it to tiebreaker. Djokovic won the tiebreaker 7-2 to make a history in Switzerland. The matchup lasted about three hours, and five minutes, the longest match of this year’s tournament.

With a triumph in clay-court 250 ATP final, Djokovic became the first man in the Open Era to lift a trophy in 20 different seasons. The 38-year-old is also the oldest champion in Geneva tournament history. After the game, the Serbian superstar shared his happiness by posting a single text on social media which reads, “1dem00.”

Novak Djokovic will now shift his focus on Roland Garros as he looks to chase record 25th grand slam title. The three-time French Open champion will play his first-round game against Mackenzie McDonald on Monday. Considering his clay court preparation, it would be a challenging tournament for Djokovic.
