The Aussie is a former Top-15 starlet.
The never-ending injury concerns continue to haunt former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios. Days after exiting from the US Open Mixed Doubles event, Kyrgios has now announced his withdrawal from the Singles event as well. The 30-year-old has played just one Grand Slam match-up since 2022. With mounting injury troubles derailing Kyrgios’ career, questions are being raised about his long-term future in the sport.
A nagging knee injury has plagued Nick Kyrgios this year. Additionally, he has constantly faced setbacks in his recovery – the latest of which came in June when the 30-year-old was forced to skip the entire grass-court season. As a result, there were always doubts about Kyrgios’ US Open participation. Although he initially paired with Naomi Osaka for the US Open Mixed Doubles event, he had to promptly withdraw.

A Lucky Loser will replace him in the draw.
Now Kyrgios has exited the US Open Men’s Singles event too. His knee injury forced him to miss the grass court season, as well as the events in Washington, Toronto, and Cincinnati. It hasn’t been an easy road for the Australian, who has fallen completely off the radar since his peak in 2022. There is no doubt that fans will be disheartened to see a player of his calibre (once ranked 13 in Men’s Singles) being unable to stay fit. Since 2023, Kyrgios’ career hasn’t been the same, especially due to his unending knee and ankle issues.
Right before the 2023 Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios revealed he had developed a cyst in his knee caused by a tear in his lateral meniscus. In short, he needed to undergo surgery and was forced to withdraw from the event in the process. However, this was just the beginning of Kyrgios’ troubles. The Australian aimed for a French Open return but then faced a scary armed robbery, which injured his foot. Yet, Kyrgios prepared for a Wimbledon comeback.

Adding to his misery post this setback, Kyrgios tore a ligament in his wrist during a training session. He later revealed that the surgery to fix that issue has inevitably left him with a lifelong arthritis problem. Due to this surgery, Kyrgios missed the entire 2024 season. However, Kyrgios’ 2025 return hasn’t been comfortable either. His wrist continued to bother him, and after the first round loss in the Australian Open, Kyrgios admitted he may have played his “last singles match” in the event.
Kyrgios showed a glimpse of his old self in Miami, but eventually his wrist and shoulder issues proved to be too much. While the 30-year-old has vehemently declared that he wants to continue playing, it seems his body is betraying him. With Kyrgios missing the US Open due to his knee injury, one wonders what the future holds for this Australian star.

Perhaps that’s why I love indulging in some fun banter and always try to inculcate a debate through my work. That’s why I encourage the readers to express their views freely – after all, that’s what makes sports fun.
