‘Next Question Please’ – Novak Djokovic Refuses to Address Fitness Issues After Loss to Valentin Vacherot at ATP Shanghai Masters 2025

Djokovic was visibly struggling with physical issues during SF loss.

Novak Djokovic made sure to keep Monegasque qualifier Valentin Vacherot in the limelight, after the 26-year-old reached his maiden Masters-1000 final at the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters. The Serbian refused to talk about his own physical issues, and congratulated Vacherot instead. With an important home stretch of the 2025 season fast approaching, questions about Djokovic’s participation are imminent.

On Saturday, Vacherot produced a fine display of baseline attacks to outlast Djokovic 6-3 6-4 in just under two hours. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was visibly struggling with lower back concerns – particularly during the first set. Despite his best efforts at making a comeback, Vacherot remained focused on the task at hand. The World No. 204 broke in the ninth game and served it out to become the lowest ranked Masters-1000 finalist in the history of the game.

“How I got taught to live life where I grew up is to always keep your feet on Earth,” Vacherot divulged after his win. He will rise to the ATP Top-60 when the new rankings are released on Monday. “I just want to say thank you to everyone who put a little brick into my career, because they taught me how to be down to Earth and fight. This is probably why I’m here today.”

Novak Djokovic Does Not Provide Clarity on Fitness After Shanghai Loss

Djokovic was searching for his fifth title in Shanghai this week. The 38-year-old has endured a topsy-turvy campaign in 2025, and this event was arguably his best shot at adding to his tally of championships. Earlier this year, Nole captured his 100th career trophy at the Geneva Open. Although he eased past the likes of Marin Cilic and Zizou Bergs, it wasn’t meant to be for Djokovic.

In the post-match press conference, Djokovic was asked about his fitness and whether he plans on travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Six Kings Slam. “I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters final,” said the Serb. “Going from qualifications, it’s an amazing story. I told him at the net that he has had an amazing tournament – but more so his attitude is very good. And his game is amazing as well.”

“It’s all about him. I wish him all the best in the finals, and the better player won today.” Having diverted from the question that was initially asked, there was a follow-up enquiry about Djokovic’s physical condition. “No, next question please,” requested Djokovic. This possibly raises doubts regarding the former World No. 1’s presence at the upcoming tournaments in the near future.
