The world No. 3 battled back from a 0-3 double-break deficit and a 3-5 second-set deficit, clinching the decisive break at 4-5 in the first set to seal a remarkable comeback.

The 56-player main draw at Wuhan witnessed shocks early, with the top eight seeds eliminated in the first round, highlighting the tournament’s unpredictability. Gauff’s opponent in the final, Pegula, secured $351,003 for her runner-up finish, while semifinalists Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini earned $180,100 each. Quarterfinalists, including Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Katerina Siniakova, and Laura Siegemund, took home $83,250, with other payouts ranging from $41,500 in the round of 16 down to $16,860 for first-round exits.

Points for earlier exits ranged from 120 for the last 16, 65 for second-round losses to 10 for first-round eliminations.
