The Undisputed WWE Championship is notable for being one of the most prestigious titles in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The title first debuted in 1963 and has undergone various name changes over the years before it was rebranded to its present name. Notably, Bob Backlund was the first winner of the title on February 20, 1978 under the WWF name of the company. Likewise, The Undertaker was the first wrestler to become the winner of the title under the WWE name on May 19, 2022.

The WWE World Title has changed hands over the years. These include several notable wrestlers like Triple H, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, Brock Lesnar to modern-day stars like John Cena, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes and more. However, who are the wrestlers that have won the WWE World title in their careers the most? Let’s have a look.

Who has the most WWE World Titles?

John Cena presently has the most WWE World Titles. He became a 17-time World Champion at WrestleMania 41 Night 2 on April 20, 2025 by defeating Cody Rhodes. However, his methods of doing so were far removed from the “John Cena” people fans knew and loved for years. He first hit Cody Rhodes with a low-blow and then with the title. Then, he won the match via pinfall.

These illegal tactics in winning the title is because the “John Cena,” who followed the “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect” philosophy had become the very thing that he once hated. That is, he turned heel on his loyal fans at Elimination Chambers: Toronto on March 1, 2025 (via WWE on YouTube).

Turning heel benefitted “The Cenation Leader” though. He broke the all-time record of Ric Flair, who is known as a 16-time World Champion and was tied with John Cena. Once John Cena turned heel, he promised to break Ric Flair’s record and become a 17-time World Champion. He managed to achieve exactly what he set out to do and broke Ric Flair record. His 17th-reign as the WWE World title holder started since WrestleMania 21 as per CBS Sports.

Notably, John Cena first won the WWE World title on April 3, 2005 as per the WWE official site. His first reign extended for 279 days from April 3, 2005 to January 8, 2006, when he lost it to Edge.

However, John Cena is not the only one who won the WWE World title multiple-times. Here are some wrestlers who has also been successful in doing so.

Ric Flair (16 Reigns)

Ric Flair has earned 16-time World title reigns throughout his career. He was tied with John Cena for the same, which John Cena broke at WrestleMania 41 Night 2 on April 20, 2025. “The Nature Boy”’s first reign as the WWF World Title holder started on January 19, 1992 and continued for 77 days until April 5, 1992 as per the WWE official site. He won the title for the last time on September 1, 1992 and lost it on October 12, 1992.

Triple H (14 Reigns)

Triple H comes third in the sport with 14-time World Title reign as per CBS Sports. His first reign lasted for 24 days from August 23, 1999 to September 16, 1999.

Triple H’s last World title reign was for 69 days from January 24, 2016 to April 3, 2016 as per the WWE official site.

Randy Orton (14 Reigns)

Randy Orton has occupied the fourth-spot in this list as per CBS Sports. He has 14-time World Title reign so far. “The Legend Killer”s first reign lasted only one day when he won it from John Cena on October 7, 2007. However, he lost it the same day.

Randy “The Viper” Orton’s last reign so far extended for 22 days from October 25, 2020 to November 16, 2020 as per the WWE official site.

Hulk Hogan (12 Reigns)

The fifth spot for the World title reign goes to Hulk Hogan who won it 12 times throughout his career as per CBS Sports. His first reign extended for 1.5K days from January 23 1984 to February 5, 1988. Likewise, his last reign was as “Hollywood Hogan” and it was for 28 days from April 21, 2002 to May 19, 2022 as per the WWE official site.

Edge (11 Reigns)

Edge occupies the sixth spot for most World Title reigns with 11 reigns as per CBS Sports. “The Rated-R Superstar” started his first reign on January 8, 2006 and continued it for 20 days till January 29, 2006. His last reign in the company was for 20 days again from January 25, 2009 to February 15, 2009 as per the WWE official site.

The Rock, Brock Lesnar and Sting (10 Reigns each)

The Rock, Brock Lesnar and Sting are all tied in the seventh place with 10-World Title reigns as per CBS Sports. The Rock’s first reign covered 50 days from November 15, 1998 to January 4, 1999. His last one was for 69 days from January 27, 2013 to April 7, 2013.

Brock Lesnar’s first reign was for 83 days from August 25, 2022 to November 17, 2022. His last reign was for 184+ days from October 4, 2019 to April 5, 2020 as per the WWE official site.

Sting also has 10-World Title reigns as per CBS Sports. However, he did not win any titles in WWE. Moreover, WWE also does not consider him winning the TNA World Heavyweight Championship four-times in his career.
