New York might just be the playground for teen dreams to become a reality.
Is it getting hot in here? The 2025 US Open is certainly shaping up to be something special, and unsurprisingly so. After all, the final major of the season has historically been the one where impossible becomes possible; a place where magic happens. While this year’s odds on the women’s side favor Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, a strange trend has emerged. And that might turn Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko into unexpected favorites.
Despite huge competition in the WTA, no one player has truly emerged as a big favorite for the US Open. Swiatek is on a hot run, but can she outlast the competition? While she has all the weapons in her arsenal to do so, a strange trend has emerged at the US Open since 2019. According to this interesting observation, in every odd year since then, a teenage sensation has lifted the trophy.
A fascinating trend that I hope continues…

A teenager has won the US Open in women's singles on the last *three* odd years:
2019 – 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu
2021 – 18-year-old Emma Raducanu
2023 – 19-year-old Coco Gauff
All eyes on Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko? 👀
Sounds unbelievable, but it is true. In 2019, it was the 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu. Then, in 2021, it was the 18-year-old Emma Raducanu. And finally, the 19-year-old Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam here in 2023. Could this streak continue this year? It would certainly be exciting to see another star emerge at the US Open, especially with the quick rise of tennis’ latest teen sensations.
Mirra Andreeva is perhaps one of the biggest breakout stories of 2025. The 19-year-old created history when she became the youngest to win a WTA 1000 event (Dubai Championships) since 2007. However, that was just the beginning of her ascent. Andreeva outlasted Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells finals to win her second WTA 1000 tournament. Although she got eliminated in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, Andreeva still climbed to No. 5 in the world.
The only question for Andreeva, is whether or not she can regain her Dubai and Indian Wells form. The 19-year old couldn’t make it past the Round of 32 at the Canadian Open and didn’t play in Cincinnati. However, she isn’t the only teenage to look out for at this year’s US Open. There is also the Canadian Open winner, Victoria Mboko, who can crash the party.
Mboko has shown a steep rise this season. The 18-year old started the year ranked No. 333. And as of now, Mboko ranks at No. 24 – which contextualises her immense growth. Though Mboko hasn’t really performed well in the Grand Slams, her overall trajectory and recent Canadian Open win puts her in the category of players to watch out for in this year’s US Open.
While these two remain high on the list, there is a whole host of WTA specialists who can also rise to the occasion. Whatever be the case, trust the US Open to provide a platform to the next generation of superstars!

A passionate sports fan since childhood, it was always my dream to cover the peak of human potential. Baseball, Tennis, and Football (or Soccer) have been closest to my heart. From Rafael Nadal’s never-say-die attitude to Roger Federer’s beautiful backhand, I’ve seen it all. Prior to the Playoffs, I’ve worked in EssentiallySports and Pro Football and Sports Network.

Perhaps that’s why I love indulging in some fun banter and always try to inculcate a debate through my work. That’s why I encourage the readers to express their views freely – after all, that’s what makes sports fun.
