Here's how the Dutch Lion reacted to Russell's words yesterday.
The race went from bad to worst for Max Verstappen at the Spanish Grand Prix. Initially, it looked like Verstappen had better speed this weekend to challenge the McLarens. However, soon it was clear that his Red Bull is making no real progress against the Papaya cars.
Max Verstappen was starting the race from the second row. Immediately at the race started, Verstappen went up against Norris snatching second place from him. Although, the Dutchman couldn’t hold on to his position much longer. Verstappen was soon passed by Norris owing to his much superior speed. It looked Verstappen would finish on the podium at least.
🚨 | George Russell fires back at Max Verstappen:
— Fastest Pitstop (@FastestPitStop) December 5, 2024
"[…] I think we've also got a duty as drivers."
"I've got an eight-year-old nephew who's just started go-karting, who watches all of my races, watches TikTok, watches YouTube, and for a world champion to be coming out saying… pic.twitter.com/xkyaRmiOnk
But unfortunately for him, his made a strategic error giving him no chance to fightback. Frustrated with his team, Verstappen drove straight into George Russell when giving back the position. He landed with a 10s penalty going from fifth to tenth in the race.
Things aren’t going quite smoothly between Max Verstappen and George Russell. The pair have made contact more than any other drivers. Once again, it was George Russell who came in Max Verstappen’s line of fire.
Russell was in fifth behind Charles Leclerc. But, Max Verstappen’s mistake on race restart gave him the chance to lunge for an overtake. He forced Max wide banging wheels with the Dutchman at Turn 1. Verstappen had to take the escape road and rejoin ahead of Russell. The stewards asked him to give back the position which he did not like.
George Russell believes Max Verstappen's conduct is "a shame for all the sort of young kids looking up aspiring to be F1 drivers".

Verstappen aggressively drove into George Russell when the latter was trying to overtake. The commentators were shocked at his behaviour and wanted him disqualified.
Russell explained in his post race interview that, he did not expect that collision. He also claimed that Max Verstappen was setting in a wrong example for young F1 fans and drivers. The comments did go well with Max Verstappen. He sarcastically responded to Russell saying- “he would bring in tissues next time“.
We definitely believe that it was totally Max’s face fault here. The Dutchman can’t spend his frustration on other drivers simply because they are trying to earn maximum points. He has no business trying to dive into Russell who was following race directives. As it stands, Verstappen gave a huge blow to his 2025 championship chances with his behaviour.
I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university's Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
