Marketa Vondrousova Defeats Wang Xinyu in Berlin Open Final to End 2-Year Long Title Drought

Comeback for former Wimbledon champion ahead of the 2025 Wimbledon!

Marketa Vondrousova ended a long two-year drought of singles title in Berlin after a classic 7-6(12-10), 4-6, 6-2 victory over Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu, who was playing her first WTA final. The Czech Republican ace required three sets to win her first title since the Wimbledon 2023. Interesting fact is she will be back in Wimbledon again but as the unseeded player.

Vondrousova had a dream campaign in the Berlin Open. The 25-year-old outclassed the world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals in straight sets. She beat Keys, Shnaider, Jabeur, Sabalenka and Wang in a journey to the final. The Czech Republican ace came through a wrist injury which kept him out for almost a year.

Marketa Vondrousova Wins Her First Title Since Wimbledon 2023

Marketa Vondrousova, ranked 164th in the world, appeared in her first final since winning Wimbledon in 2023. She was facing the Chinese giant-killer, who beat world No. 2 Coco Gauff in the journey to the maiden WTA Finals. Both players looked solid in the opening set and Wang was leading the set at one stage.

However, the former Wimbledon champion fought back to take the first set 7-6(10). The Czech Republican ace saved six setpoints in a first-set tiebreak. Vondrousova didn’t lose a single set in her run to the WTA final but faced a first set-defeat against Wang when the Chinese ace forced the decider after a 6-4 win in second set.

Vondrousova dominated the final set and Wang had no answer as the Chinese ace won only two games. She built a 4-1 lead in the decider and later made it 6-2 in the end. She gained the championship point with a dropshot, a crosscourt backhand winner and a strong forehand.

The Czech Republican ace made a memorable victory on Sunday and it could be a comeback of the former Wimbledon champion. Injuries hurt his performance over the years and she needed one breakthrough in the year. She also becomes only woman player to win the Wimbledon and a grass-court title in last one decade. Vondrousova is now the second Czech and left-handed player after Petra Kvitova in 2023 to win the Berlin Open since 2021.
