Major Changes Could Be Coming to the NFL Which Could Include an 18th Game in the Season!

Eric Divakaran

The NFL is currently buzzing with various discussions about potential changes as the league looks to evolve with the each passing season. These changes have sparked debates amongst fans, players, executives, coaches and more. With the 2025 season starting by September 4th, major talks continues to be the story this offseason to boost competitiveness, player’s safety, and of course fan engagement.

One of the major topics has been tweaking the playoff format. The saying is that expanding the postseason or adjusting seeding to reward regular-season performance. This would perhaps work best for some of the teams like the Baltimore Ravens who dominate the regular season but fall short come the playoffs. Many also want the Tush Push play gone from the game, and even automatic 1st downs on defensive penalties has been questioned this offseason. While the NFL cannot remove or alter every single rules that are in the game, recently there’s also been talks about introducing an 18th game in the regular season. Let’s find out more.

NFL Owners Want 18 Games in the Regular Season

The league and the owners of the NFL teams, including the commissioner of the NFL Roger Goodell, wants there to be an 18th regular season game instead of 17. All things considered, this might be a bad idea and it’s simply because of all the injuries that take place in the regular season. More games means more fatigue and why risk further injuries to players?

According to Yahoo sports, the commissioner of the NFL and owners will begin to make more assertive effort to add 18th game in the regular season, and according to two high-level executives, they believe that the talks about that will only intensify when the spring meeting takes place in Florida next week.

As commissioner Goodell and the rest of the NFL head into the offseason, the meeting’s outcome could reshape the NFL’s future. Every proposal has its positives and its negatives, and while fans might praise or boo the changes, the owners of the NFL teams will propose changes that will benefit them in the long run and they could care less about what the world has to say.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
