Luka Modric Picks No. 14 at AC Milan in Tribute to Carlo Ancelotti

Luka Modric has officially begun the next chapter of his legendary career, joining AC Milan on a free transfer following his emotional farewell from Real Madrid in May. The 38-year-old Croatian playmaker signed a one-year deal with the Rossoneri, with an option to extend for a further season.

After 13 glorious years at the Santiago Bernabéu, Modric now takes on a new challenge in Serie A, and he has marked the move with a sentimental gesture—selecting the No. 14 shirt at Milan, a number that carries special significance.

A Shirt Number with a Deeper Meaning

Modric wore the iconic No. 10 jersey at Real Madrid for over a decade, but opted for No. 14 at Milan as a tribute to former manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian, who played for Milan in the 1980s and early 1990s, occasionally wore the same number during his playing days at San Siro.

The bond between Modric and Ancelotti runs deep, with the Croatian midfielder having been managed by Ancelotti during both of his coaching spells at Real Madrid. The tribute is a nod to the mentor who helped shape some of Modric’s finest years in Madrid.

Eyes Set on Serie A Debut

Modric addressed the press briefly upon his arrival, stating: “I’m very happy to be here, great challenges await me. I will have time to talk about all this.” He is expected to begin training at Milanello on August 4 and will be part of AC Milan’s pre-season campaign.
