Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has refused to engage in discussions comparing his current squad to previous iterations that included Kylian Mbappé, as his team prepares to face Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s high-stakes showdown in New Jersey, the Spanish coach sidestepped a question about whether PSG are stronger without Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer. Enrique made it clear his focus is firmly on the present and future of the club, avoiding any commentary on the past.
Still, he acknowledged that facing Madrid — and potentially crossing paths with his former star — adds a unique edge to the match. The 54-year-old said that playing against the most decorated club in football provides extra motivation for PSG, who are seeking their first-ever Club World Cup title.
PSG must also battle the elements during the semi-final. With the match set for an afternoon kickoff in New Jersey, temperatures are expected to once again exceed 35°C (95°F), accompanied by high humidity — conditions that have already affected matches earlier in the tournament.
Enrique admitted that the heat presents a serious challenge for players and affects the quality of the game. However, he insisted that his side is adapting to the conditions and will be ready for what could be their toughest test yet in the competition.
The former Barcelona and Spain manager, who has guided PSG with authority since his appointment, sees the clash with Madrid not just as a reunion with familiar faces, but as another step toward silverware.
The winner of this semi-final will advance to the Club World Cup final on Sunday, where they will face Chelsea, who defeated Fluminense 2-0 thanks to a brace from João Pedro.
