On Sunday, 03/09, the Los Angeles Clippers (34-29) will host the Sacramento Kings (33-29) in a Western Conference Regular-Season match-up. The Clippers have slumped to the 8th place in the West, and the Kings are building a firm grasp at the 9th spot. Will the Kings come on top in the battle, which can help them jump a spot, or will the Clippers hold the fort for now? Read about the preview, total predictions, and player props here.
Clippers: Brilliant at home, but their road woes have held them back
The Los Angeles Clippers will come into this game after a 10-point win against the New York Knicks on the heels of a 27-point performance by James Harden. It was their second straight win, which has helped them alleviate a 2-6 record on their latest road trip. Their 13-19 away-from-home record is the worst among the top nine teams in the West, but a 21-10 record at home is among the top five squads. Their defense has been terrific, and they have given up 108.6 points per game(4th). While James Harden and Norman Powell(currently injured) have kept the offense going, Ivica Zubac has been a tremendous rim protector, rebounder, and inside scorer. Thus, the team can be a handful during the postseason since their two-way ace Kawhi Leonard may be available for most of the season now.
Expected Starting Lineup
PG: James Harden | SG: Kris Dunn | SF: Kawhi Leonard | PF: Nicolas Batum | C: Ivica Zubac
Key Injuries/Updates: Norman Powell is OUT and will probably return around the third week of March.
Kings: Need to win games like these
The Kings enter the game after an 18-point win against the San Antonio Spurs as Zach LaVine stacked up 36 points. They have won five out of their last six games and hold an 8-3 record since the second week of February. During that period, they scored 121.1 PPG(6th) on an excellent 49.9% shooting clip(5th). However, most of their wins have come against struggling squads, and they are 16-17 against teams with +.500 records. Thus, they need to nab a win against the Clippers to build some momentum against the winning squads. On a positive note, the reunited former Bulls duo of Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan is co-existing well and has ensured smooth offensive operations.
Expected Starting Lineup
PG: Malik Monk | SG: Zach LaVine | SF: DeMar DeRozan | SF/PF: Keegan Murray | C: Jonas Valanciunas
Key Injuries/Updates: Domantas Sabonis will be OUT for at least till March 10. The status of Malik Monk is UNCLEAR.
The Clippers have been tremendous at home on both ends. They have regularly gone past the 115-point mark here while consistently limiting their oppositions below 110 or so consistently. Meanwhile, the Kings have scored around 120 or so consistently, whereas they also give up 120+ against high-quality squads. Overall, I believe the potential total here can be in the 235+ range.
Projected Predictions:
James Harden to dish over 9.5 assists: The Beard has delivered around 9 helpers a game since February. I believe he will be in the 10-12 assists range.
Ivica Zubac to score over 19.5 points: The Clippers center has tallied 22.4 PPG in his last five affairs. I believe he will be in the 20+ points range here against Jonas Valanciunas.
DeMar DeRozan to score over 23.5 points: The Kings Wing has averaged around 22.2 PPG and has put up 24.5 PPG over the last four games. I believe he will score in the 24-27 points range.
Jonas Valanciunas to clasp over 11.5 rebounds: The Kings’ backup center has stacked 15.8 PPG and 12 rebounds per game since Domantas Sabonis has been out. I believe he will be in the 12-14 rebounds range here.
The Clippers have been stellar at home and are particularly good at fending away slightly above-average squads like the Kings. Sacramento would have loved to have Domantas Sabonis here to negate the Zubac threat, but Valanciunas has done quite well. However, I see the Kings giving a tough battle and may come up with a surprise here. Thus, I favor an upset by 3-5 points, but I admit it is a risky pick here.
