Liverpool’s season took another downward turn on Wednesday night at Anfield as PSV Eindhoven handed the Reds a brutal 4-1 defeat in the Champions League. A side already struggling domestically collapsed again under pressure, which stretched their losing run to nine defeats in twelve games. Notably, it is Reds’ worst sequence since 1953. Where Champions League had previously offered Arne Slot a temporary refuge, the Dutch side ripped it away in ruthless fashion.

Three wins from four had Liverpool positioned strongly in the league phase, including a statement victory over Real Madrid just weeks ago. But the brief sense of stability evaporated inside six minutes as Ivan Perisic converted from the spot following Virgil van Dijk’s unnecessary handball. Even when Dominik Szoboszlai equalised from close range after Cody Gakpo’s effort was parried, there was no real shift in mood or control. Instead, PSV simply waited for the next opening and Liverpool obligingly provided it.

The visitors capitalised on Liverpool’s defensive chaos in the second half. Guus Til’s composed finish restored PSV’s lead after a piercing Mauro Junior pass dissected a shaky back line. Substitute Couhaib Driouech scored PSV’s third goal as he tapped in the rebound from Ricardo Pepi’s effort. Driouech then added a clinical second in stoppage time to seal a historic win. Notably, it was PSV’s first victory over an English club since 2008.

This latest defeat leaves Liverpool in deep trouble. As supporters streamed out early, Liverpool slipped to 13th in the Champions League standings and remain deep in crisis. Questions now loom over how Slot fixes a side low on confidence and running out of time to salvage their season.
