It seems Barcelona have taken another step toward formalising the legacy of the club icon Lionel Messi at the redeveloped Camp Nou. President Joan Laporta recently confirmed that plans are progressing for a statue honouring the Argentine icon. The idea has circulated within the club for years.
However, Laporta’s latest remarks have marked the clearest indication yet that the tribute is moving from internal discussion to clear execution. Messi’s unexpected visit to the revamped stadium during Argentina’s training camp in Spain seems to have reignited the conversation.

Notably, Messi arrived quietly and without involving the Barcelona hierarchy. Even so, his post reflecting his emotions later reminded fans that his bond with the stadium he called home for more than two decades remains unbroken. The club responded to Messi’s post with a warm response.
They mentioned that Messi would always be welcome. Messi’s post also ignited anticipation about a future reunion, even if symbolic for now. At a recent book event, Laporta outlined why the statue is being prioritised. He also stressed the need for Messi’s family to approve the final design before any construction begins.

Laporta explained that the board believed the club should offer something ‘beautiful’ and lasting. It would place Messi alongside Barcelona’s great historical figures. Statues of Ladislao Kubala and Johan Cruyff already stand outside Camp Nou. It would form a lineage that Laporta believes Messi rightfully belongs to.
The push to immortalise Messi comes at a delicate moment. Laporta has previously acknowledged that relations with the forward cooled after his 2021 departure. Now although both sides avoid direct public friction, a residue from that exit remains.

Now, if a statue is unveiled during Laporta’s presidency, it would represent both a tribute and an attempt to rebuild a relationship with Lionel Messi that fractured under financial pressure and circumstance. Meanwhile, Messi continues his career with Inter Miami.
However, he has openly stated that he intends to return to Barcelona in some capacity in the future. Following his recent visit, where he mentioned how much he missed his home “with all my heart,” ensured that any discussion about long-term ties would carry emotional weight.
