Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by United States President Joe Biden on Saturday. The Argentine is among 19 people being awarded the Medal of Freedom.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the United State’s highest civilian honour, presented to individuals who have contributed to the prosperity, values, or security of the country, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.
The 2022 World Cup-winning captain has initiated healthcare and education programs for children through the Leo Messi Foundation. He also serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Messi appreciated the gesture and noted he hopes to have the opportunity to meet Biden in the near future.
Apart from Messi, Hillary Rodham Clinton, basketball legend Magic Johnson, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, U2 frontman Bono, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, and popular science education host Bill Nye received the medal from Joe Biden at White House.
The 37-year-old forward has won 46 titles in his career and has also won eight Ballon d’Or awards. Messi was named MLS MVP last year, scoring 20 goals and adding 16 assists in 19 matches. He will join Inter Miami for new season later this month and then, take part in the FIFA Club World Cup trophy in the summer.
