Fernandez seeks redemption while Kalinskaya hunts her first title of the season.
Leylah Fernandez will square off against Anna Kalinskaya in the Citi DC Open 2025 final, a matchup no one could have predicted at the start of the week. Fernandez has stormed through the draw with conviction, taking out top seed Jessica Pegula in three sets and third seed Elena Rybakina in a thrilling semifinal that went the distance. Along the way, she also brushed aside qualifier Taylor Townsend and Australian teenager Maya Joint.
The stage is set 🏆

The 2021 US Open finalist has been searching for momentum all year, and this run comes as a much-needed boost. Prior to D.C., Fernandez had not lifted a trophy since Hong Kong in 2023 and had only one quarterfinal appearance this season, in Nottingham. Despite the inconsistency, she’s remained aggressive on the return and sharp on break points, converting nearly 43% of her chances across 30 matches, firing 60 aces.

Kalinskaya, on the other hand, has quietly pieced together one of her most efficient runs of the year. She has yet to drop a set in Washington, powering past Kamilla Rakhimova, Magda Linette, Clara Tauson, and Emma Raducanu. After an injury-riddled start to 2025, the Russian has found her rhythm when it matters most. The final marks her first of the season and a shot at career redemption.
See you on Saturday 👋

Leylah Fernandez holds a 1-0 edge in her head-to-head with Kalinskaya, having prevailed in their lone meeting, a gritty three-setter in Guadalajara back in 2021.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Guadalajara | Round of 32 | Leylah Fernandez | 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 |
| Leylah Fernandez | Category | Anna Kalinskaya |
| 36 | Current Ranking | 48 |
| 213-145 | Career W-L | 308-191 |
| 16-17 | YTD W-L | 10-13 |

Leylah Fernandez has clawed her way past two top seeds and looks dialed in when it matters most. With her return game clicking and confidence resurging, she might just edge Kalinskaya, given that the Canadian also has a lead in their H2H.
