Ferrara’s Return on Sinner Entourage Raises Eyebrows

Sinner’s decision to bring Umberto Ferrara back, following the coach’s brief stint with Matteo Berrettini, marks a full-circle moment few anticipated. Over the past 18 months, the 23-year-old has been in near-total control on the court, winning four Grand Slam titles, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2025.

Yet, behind the scenes, his coaching scenario has been unstable. With Darren Cahill’s future still uncertain and Ferrara’s reputation under continued scrutiny, the timing of this reunion, just weeks before a Grand Slam, has stirred debate among fans and analysts alike.

Cahill had previously stated that he would step away from Sinner’s team at the end of 2025 to focus on family. Amid this transition, Sinner has opted to bring back Ferrara, who many believe bore indirect responsibility for the doping suspension that briefly halted the Italian’s rise.

Last year, Ferrara purchased an over-the-counter spray, Trofodermin, for Sinner’s physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. The product, available in Italy without prescription, contained clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid. Naldi applied it to a cut on Sinner’s hand and proceeded to massage the player without gloves. This led to two positive tests and a three-month suspension for Sinner in early 2025.

Although an independent ITIA tribunal ruled that Sinner bore “no fault or negligence,” the fallout was significant. Sinner chose to part ways with both Ferrara and Naldi. “I’m not feeling that confident to continue with them,” he said before the 2024 US Open.

The coaching picture remains murky. While Cahill’s long-term plans are unresolved, he will not travel to New York for the upcoming Grand Slam. “Nothing’s certain at the moment,” Simone Vagnozzi told ATP Tour, “But we’ll all be happy if Darren stays.” In the meantime, Vagnozzi will lead Sinner’s team in New York, with Ferrara also present.

As Sinner prepares to defend his US Open crown, the choice to rehire Ferrara adds a layer of intrigue to an already complex situation. Should the Italian triumph again in New York, the gamble may be hailed as a masterstroke. But if things unravel, the decision could be remembered as a misstep.
