The basic crux of the story if that he got shot. The shooting happened in broad daylight. Murphy was walking down a street when two bullets struck him in the face. The bullets pierced his cheek, dislodged his jaw, and exited through the base of his neck. In his own words in an interview with BBC Sport, it felt like ‘dying in Call of Duty.’ When he regained consciousness, all he could hear was a high-pitched beep. His mouth felt strangely heavy. When he spat on the ground, the bullets fell out.

Murphy somehow managed to get into his cousin’s car and reached the hospital. Doctors immediately took him to the ICU, where he remained in a coma for two days. When he finally woke up, he was surrounded by concerned family and friends. The recovery wasn’t quick or easy. It took nearly six months of rehabilitation before Murphy could return to anything resembling normal life. The physical scars remain visible today – a deep dimple on his cheek and an indent on his neck serve as permanent reminders of his brush with death.

After recovering from the shooting, Lerone Murphy turned to mixed martial arts as a way to channel his energy positively. He didn’t just participate, he excelled! His professional career began at FCC 15 with a unanimous decision win over Martin Fouda, followed by a string of first-round TKO victories against various opponents.
