The American has been on the pro circuit for over a decade and a half.
In a captivating revelation, former US Open finalist Jessica Pegula has revealed her retirement timeline. Pegula, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, has stated that she does not wish to play beyond a certain age. The American has won nine singles titles and seven doubles trophies during the course of her career, including three singles championships in 2025 alone.
Having turned pro in 2009, Jessica Pegula evolved into one of the most consistent WTA stars over the years. After a plethora of quarterfinal finishes, the now 31-year-old reached her maiden Grand Slam final at the 2024 US Open. A billionaire heiress in her own right, the American has carved out a phenomenal career that has seen her being crowned World No. 1 in doubles. In a recent interview with fellow player and former World No. 4 Caroline Garcia, Pegula hinted that her retirement is closer than one thinks.
“I’ll definitely not be playing at 35,” said the New York local. Currently aged 31, this gives Pegula around four years on the professional circuit. The revelation was made on the Tennis Insider Club podcast hosted by the Frenchwoman. “Definitely not. I think that’s where I have to stop for sure.”

Pegula has also stated that fellow American Coco Gauff played a role in convincing her to prolong her career and give the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles a shot. Speaking about the Olympic dream, she said, “I think it would be cool to try and make the Olympics because it’s in LA in a couple of years. I’m counting it as two years, because then you qualify. So I’ll probably have an idea by then if I’m in or not.”

Since winning the Bad Homburg Open title in June, things have taken a drastic turn for Jessica Pegula. The 31-year-old was dumped out of the tournament in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships in July. Nonetheless, Pegula had to switch off and switch on for the North American hard court swing – where she has tasted success in the past. Defending runner-up points at Flushing Meadows, this was an ideal preparatory test for the World No. 4. However, things didn’t go to plan.
Entering the Citi DC Open in Washington as the top seed, Pegula lost to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 3-6 6-1 5-7 in the Round of 16. While the southpaw went on to lift the trophy, concerns sparked for the American. Looking for a quick turnaround at the Canadian Open in Montreal, Pegula was defeated in Round-3 by the unseeded Anastasia Sevastova after winning the first set. To make matters worse, her run in Cincinnati was cut short yet again – this time by 31st seed Magda Linette.
Jessica Pegula has secured just two wins in her last four tournaments ahead of the US Open. Do you think she can repeat her heroics from 2024? Drop in your early predictions.
