Ostapenko opens the US Open against qualifier Wang in a first-round battle.
The 25th seed, Jelena Ostapenko, begins her US Open campaign against qualifier Xiyu Wang. Ostapenko’s singles season has been inconsistent. Though she claimed the Stuttgart title with a stunning win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and reached the Qatar final, she failed to advance past the third round elsewhere, with several early exits.
However, she has a perfect record over world No. 2 Iga Swiatek with 6-0. Her doubles results have been stronger, with titles in Abu Dhabi and Charleston and finals in Melbourne and Dubai. In singles this year, she has played 33 matches, struck 144 aces, and posted a 66.4% first-serve win rate along with a 50.3% break-point conversion.

Wang, meanwhile, is still looking for momentum on tour. The 2023 Guangzhou champion has yet to progress past a second round this season, with her Australian Open run marking a career best. The 24-year-old has mostly exited early in both WTA and Challenger events, including qualifiers. Across five main-draw matches this year, she has hit 13 aces, winning 65.7% of first-serve points and 41.2% on return.

Jelena Ostapenko holds a 2-0 lead in her head-to-head against Xiyu Wang. The pair first clashed in Miami back in 2021 and crossed paths again in Dubai in 2024, with Ostapenko emerging victorious in both. Still, Wang managed to push the former Grand Slam champion to three sets each time, proving her resistance.

Ostapenko’s firepower and experience at the big stage should give her the upper hand, though Wang’s lefty game and ability to stretch matches could test the Latvian’s consistency.

Unreal.
Jelena beats Iga AGAIN.
But this time, she did it on a clay court where Iga had an 11-1 record.
She now leads the head to head 6-0.

✅24th top 10 win
✅3rd top 10 win of 2025
