Boston Celtics forward could be the first active player in NBA to have a share in WNBA franchise.
Boston Celtics forward, Jayson Tatum plans to introduce a WNBA franchise in his hometown. Tatum is willing to invest $200 million in an upcoming WNBA expansion team in St Louis. He is on the verge of becoming the first active player in NBA to have a share in WNBA setup.
WNBA currently have 12 teams and more teams will be added to expand the competition like NBA. The WNBA will welcome the Golden State Valkyries as the new team in 2025. Two teams from Toronto and Portland will join the competition in 2026.
WNBA are not stopping here as they want to add few more in the next two years. Cathy Engelbert, WNBA Commissioner is eyeing an expansion and there are many candidates in the race. As per fresh updates, potential cities for the 16th franchise include Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Austin, Charlotte, Miami, Milwaukee, and St. Louis.
St. Louis could be the first franchise which will be owned by an active NBA player and Jayson Tatum is keen to bring his hometown from season 2027-28. It will help him to make rapid growth in women’s sports in St Louis. WNBA recently changed their rule where NBA players can own stakes in WNBA teams. All the plans are ready and as per reports, it will be led by billionaires Richard Chaifetz and David Hoffman.

Tatum was also in action for the Celtics in the NBA Cup where his side lost to the Hawks 117-116. The Celtics forward scored 20 points, six rebounds, eight assists, one steal and two blocks while shooting 5/16 from the field and 2/9 from the three-point range. He was criticised for his poor game in clutch time where Atlanta snatched the game with just one point.
