Could this be the last match of Richard Gasquet's glorious career?
Day 5 of the 2025 French Open continues with some enthralling matches to look forward to. On court Philippe-Chatrier, the second match of the day will feature the men’s number one seed Jannik Sinner taking on local favorite Richard Gasquet for a place in the third round.
Sinner is back with a bang from his anti-doping 3-month ban. His first tournament after the ban was the Italian Open just prior to Roland Garros, and he made it to the final only to lose to Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner would be looking to continue his form and make a deep run in Paris once again.
The veteran Gasquet is nearing the end of his tennis career, and a win over Sinner would be one of the highlights of his career, even after being on tour for over two decades.
It has been a difficult year so far for the Italian number 1. Despite winning the Australian Open at the start of the year, he was immediately hit with the anti-doping ban, sidelining him till only recently. However, Sinner hasn’t lost his step and continues to improve each passing match. With 12 wins and just 1 loss heading into Paris, it will be a tough ask to get by him.
Although there is not much to go on with the limited number of matches the Italian has played this year, his stats are still quite good. Sinner has hit 72 aces, has held serve a whopping 91% of the time, and has converted 45% of his break points.
World #1 Jannik Sinner comes back from 0-4 and 2-5 down in the 3rd set to beat Arthur Rinderknech 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 and reach the 2nd round at #RolandGarros.

The Frenchman has been far from his best, with age and the physical stress of several years on tour taking their toll on his body. Gasquet’s best days are truly behind him. He has struggled with his service this year, hitting only 22 aces and conceding 25 double faults, although he does have a healthy break point conversion rate of 40%.
The head-to-head between these two players has been completely dominated by Sinner, who holds a 3-0 lead. The pair met twice in 2023 and once in 2024; this will be their first meeting in 2025.
Interestingly, the duo has played each other once on all three hard courts, grass courts, and clay courts, and the most recent meeting came at this very same place in the round of 64 at Roland Garros.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Roland Garros | Round of 64 | Jannik Sinner | 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 |
| 2023 | Halle | Round of 32 | Jannik Sinner | 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 |
| 2023 | ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells | Round of 64 | Jannik Sinner | 6-3, 7-6(2) |
Gasquet has had a splendid career spanning over 2 decades. He has gone toe-to-toe with the best and has won 16 titles along the way. But, when it comes to achieving the highest accolades in the sport, the Frenchman does not compare to Sinner, who is already the world number one and has three majors to his name.

Currently, there is a gulf of difference between the way Gasquet has been playing and the way Sinner is playing. Ideally, this should not be much of a competition, and despite the home crowd that will get behind their man, there seems to be no doubt that the outcome will be in favor of Sinner.
Prediction: Sinner in straight sets

The betting odds for this match reflect a similar sentiment that Sinner is miles ahead of his opponent and a win for Gasquet seems highly improbable.
Jannik Sinner Win: 1/100
Richard Gasquet Win: 19/1

After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
