During a recent appearance on the Grin Reapers YouTube channel, Maddalena welcomed the possibility of facing lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in what would be a champion vs. champion superfight.

“That would be nice. In Perth. That would be a bit of a story, Volk [revenge]. We’ll see. Anything’s possible. We get through Belal, and then I think, yeah, I guess opportunities will present themselves.”

The potential matchup carries extra significance for Maddalena because of his connection to Alexander Volkanovski. While they don’t train at the same gym full-time, the two Aussie fighters have worked together, most recently during Volkanovski’s camp for his UFC 314 bout against Diego Lopes. Maddalena speaks highly of ‘The Great,’ calling him “Australia’s greatest athlete.” This camaraderie between Australian fighters shows the strong national pride within their growing MMA community.

The Islam-Volk History

The rivalry between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski has become one of the most compelling storylines in recent UFC history. Their first encounter at UFC 284 in February 2023 was an instant classic. Volkanovski, moving up from featherweight, surprised everyone by giving the much larger Makhachev all he could handle. The back-and-forth battle went the distance, with Makhachev winning a controversial decision that many observers thought could have gone Volkanovski’s way.

Their rematch at UFC 294 in October 2023 told a different story. Volkanovski stepped in on just 11 days’ notice when Charles Oliveira withdrew from his scheduled title fight against Makhachev. This history gives any potential Makhachev-Maddalena fight added drama, as Jack would carry the hopes of an entire nation looking to settle the score with the dominant lightweight champion. Before any of this can happen, though, Maddalena must first overcome the significant challenge of Belal Muhammad at UFC 315 in Montreal on May 10.
