Is Justin Fields the Answer New Jets’ Head Coach Aaron Glenn is Looking For?

The New York Jets now have a clear plan in mind with the signing of former Bears and Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. Having already made up their minds to cut ties with Aaron Rodgers after a failed two-year experiment, the Jets are heading in a new direction. They also released wide receiver Davante Adams who has since signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

The 26-year-old Fields has just signed a 2-year deal with the Jets worth $40 million and received a $30 million guarantee. That figures out to $20 million annually for a signal caller whose future was in severe doubt after the Bears traded him to the Steelers in 2024.

Signed as a backup to Russell Wilson in 2024, Fields was provided stiff competition during training camp and preseason for the starting role. An injury to Wilson meant Fields got to start in the first 6 games of the season, leading the team to a respectable 4-2 record.

The former first round draftee from 2021 showed much more promise in the Steelers system throwing for 1,106 yards, with a career best completion rate of 65.8. He threw 5 touchdowns and only 1 interception in those 6 games but also had 5 rushing touchdowns.

Now that the Steelers have lost the opportunity to re-sign Fields, they will have to explore other opportunities. Their recent acquisition of wideout DK Metcalf means they have a great 1-2 receiver duo along with George Pickens, but they need a reliable name under center. Theoretically, Russell Wilson could yet make a return to the Steel City, but that sounds unlikely. The Steelers have also been linked with Aaron Rodgers recently, but there is no concrete news on that front either.

What Does Signing Fields Mean for the Jets?

As per reports, the Jets were pretty invested in the idea of bringing Fields to New York. This signing is completely different from what they did a couple of years ago when they struck a deal with former Packers’ legend Aaron Rodgers. Fields will provide the Jets a much more youthful option who can take his time to learn the new system.

Even though he may not have the arm talent of Rodgers and his deep ball ability, Fields’ dual-threat nature will bring a different dimension to the Jets’ game. He will also team up with wide receiver Garrett Wilson once again after the two played together for two seasons while playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes back in college.

While Wilson will remain as the true WR1, the Jets could look at the draft for another quality receiver given that Davante Adams joined the Rams and Allen Lazard may also find a new team. One more quality weapon for Fields may set this team up for progress over the next couple of seasons.

What Can We Expect From Fields Under Aaron Glenn?

In the very first year of his appointment as the Jets’ head coach, Aaron Glenn is looking to bring about a change of culture in the dressing room. Signing Fields on the first day of free agency was a big statement as the newly appointed head coach is looking for a quarterback with mental and physical strength over raw talent such as arm strength. Under Glenn, Fields will also be able to handle the tough New York media while maintaining focus on his play.

Moving on from Rodgers was crucial in that aspect of the game as the four-time MVP has a reputation for making bold statements that don’t always sit well with the general public and the media.
