21-year-old reaches first Barcelona semifinal.
No. 6 seed Holger Rune produced a borderline flawless performance to beat Casper Ruud in the 2025 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell quarterfinal. Ruud, the reigning trophy-holder in Catalonia, was completely outplayed on Pista Rafa Nadal in Friday’s second last eight clash. Rune, who was forced to withdraw from the Monte Carlo Masters last week, won 6-4 6-2.
Casper Ruud entered the tournament as the second seed, and had won his first two encounters in straight sets. The Norwegian is a two-time finalist at Roland Garros and a certified clay court maestro. In the 2024 Barcelona final, Ruud convincingly defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5 6-3. He also went into this quarterfinal against Rune with a 6-1 head to head record against the Dane.
Yet, Friday’s clash produced a massive turn of events as well as a gigantic upset.
Despite the match getting off to a flying start in terms of quality, it was Rune who played the clutch tennis from the onset. Trading heavy blows in long rallies with his 26-year-old opponent, Rune raced to a 4-0 lead. Courtesy of some fine serving and errors from his opponent, Casper Ruud was able to pull back to 3-4. But even though he started with a double fault while serving for the set, the 21-year-old closed it out in ruthless fashion.
Landing just over 50% first serves in the match, Ruud was always playing catch up. He got broken again in the opening game of the second set, and never found his range. The three-time Grand Slam runner-up hit an uncanny 29 unforced errors. When he got broken to love in the fifth game of the set, Ruud’s team possibly started booking his flight tickets back home.
Under the scorching Barcelona heat, the Norwegian began attempting more drops and high top spins to stay alive. Alas, it was too little too late. He made an approach to the net being down match point, and found his shot catching the net cord which allowed Rune to pass him with ease.
By virtue of the big win, Rune earned just his second victory in eight outings against Ruud. However, he opined that there was too much white noise regarding his inferior head to head record. “It’s no secret that ATP made a big deal about it on social media, our head to head,” the Danish prodigy told ATP Media after his win.

“But I just saw it as another match. Casper, I have bunch of respect for him. He’s a great player and I’m very happy to be able to beat him today.” On the other hand, this loss means that Ruud will slip out of the ATP Top-10 next week. Defending crucial points in Monte Carlo (runner-up in 2024) and Barcelona (champion in 2024), he failed to make an impact this year. Ruud will see himself at No. 15 in the world at best, when the rankings are released.
Holger Rune will face World No. 27 Karen Khachanov in the semifinals on Saturday. The Russian defeated home favourite Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his quarterfinal.
