Holger Rune Retires in Stockholm Open 2025 Semifinals Due to Injury

Holger Rune’s charge at the Stockholm Open 2025 ended in heartbreak on Saturday as he was forced to retire in the semifinal against Ugo Humbert. After taking the first set 6-4, Rune could not continue at 2-2 in the second set, succumbing to a lingering injury that had plagued him in previous rounds. Fans were left stunned and emotional as Rune and his team visibly struggled with the disappointment. Reports suggest the issue may involve his Achilles tendon, raising concerns about a potential lengthy absence from the tour. With Rune out, Humbert advances to face either Casper Ruud or Denis Shapovalov in the final.

Rune’s Grit and Struggles As the Injury Wasn’t Sudden

The injury was not sudden. Rune had previously shown visible signs of trouble in his quarterfinal clash with Tomas Martin Etcheverry, where he needed a medical timeout due to pain in his left thigh during the deciding set. That match, however, highlighted Rune’s spirit as he rallied from a set down, including a tense first-set tiebreak, to secure a hard-fought victory.

After the quarterfinal, Rune acknowledged his discomfort but expressed gratitude for fan support. “Yeah, not so good. I’m very happy that I managed to finish the match, honestly, you know. I couldn’t have done it without you great fans, so honestly, thank you very much; you really helped me a lot today. I was really struggling, as you saw with my left leg, but you know the energy from you guys was very special,” he said. He had hoped to carry that momentum into the semifinals.

This Stockholm appearance was particularly important for Rune, who was seeking to rebound after a tough US Open and Laver Cup run. He suffered a disappointing second-round singles exit against Francisco Cerundolo at Flushing Meadows and, alongside Casper Ruud, lost in doubles to the Alex de Minaur and Alex Michelsen pairing representing Team Europe. The Stockholm Open had represented a chance for Rune to regain form and confidence heading into the closing stretch of the season.

Despite his best efforts and determination, Rune’s body ultimately dictated the outcome, leaving fans and the tennis world to hope for a full recovery. His early exit underscores the physical toll of the sport at the highest level, and it remains to be seen when the young Dane will return to the ATP tour.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
