‘He Acted too Important’ – Nick Kyrgios Admits Shocking Truth on Andy Murray & the Cracks in Their Equation

Sankalp Harikrishnan

The Australian previously thanked Murray for ‘taking him under his wing.’

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has provided a shocking update on the end of his friendship with three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray. The two players supposedly had an amicable relationship on and off the court, which does not seem to be the case anymore. Despite Kyrgios’ personality rubbing people the wrong way in the past, Murray seemed to be someone who understood the Australian inside out.

Andy Murray retired in 2024, and has seldom been seen within tennis circles since then. On the other hand, Kyrgios is still an active player on tour. However, the 30-year-old has been away from action for a majority of the 2025 season. During their battles on the court, the British legend held a 6-1 record in the head-to-head against Kyrgios. So what caused the dent in their friendship?

Appearing on the ‘Unscripted’ podcast, Nick Kyrgios revealed all. “I wouldn’t even know if he’s a friend anymore,” Kyrgios asserted. “I guess he’s just like a colleague. We used to be closer. He was one of the people that was very supportive of me through [my journey]. But now we don’t talk as much. I wanted him on the podcast and he acted too important. So there’s your truth – it’s like ‘bro, find some time.’”

The Andy Murray-Nick Kyrgios Equation Over the Years

Murray and Kyrgios clashed for the first time in late 2014, when the Briton thrashed his counterpart at the Canada Masters. Although he was a Top-15 player at one stage, Kyrgios used to draw a lot of flak from the media for his debatable behavior on and off the court. In 2016 however, Murray defended the Aussie over the attacks on him. “You guys try and wind him up the whole time. It’s not really fair on him,” Murray remarked.

“When he makes a mistake, it’s fine. I don’t have a problem with reports on him making a mistake or doing something wrong. But it happens a lot where it doesn’t seem like he’s done much in comparison to what other players are doing, and he’s the one that gets asked all the questions about it. I’m sure he’ll start to do better and understand how to deal with all the attention.”

Subsequently, Kyrgios lauded the two-time Wimbledon winner when he joined Piers Morgan’s ‘Uncensored’ in 2023. “Andy was always a big supporter of me,” he said. “As soon as I came on the tour, he kind of saw a work in progress and took me under his wing. He saw [the self harm] and said, ‘what’s that on your arm?’ It was pretty bad at that stage.”
