‘Sometimes the Universe Has Different Plan for Us’ – Grigor Dimitrov Shares Heartfelt Social Media Post After Wimbledon Injury, Set To Miss Big Tournaments

Forced to retire at Wimbledon, Dimitrov now ruled out of upcoming tournaments.

Grigor Dimitrov has confirmed that the injury that forced him to retire during his Wimbledon fourth-round clash against Jannik Sinner is a significant pectoral issue, one that will keep him out of action from the Nordea Open, the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open. The 34-year-old Bulgarian, who was in commanding form on Centre Court before the incident, took to Instagram on Friday morning to update fans, calling it “one of the most painful moments of my career.”

Dimitrov had surged to a 6-3, 7-5 lead against the world No. 1 before disaster struck in the third set. At 2-2, he reached for his chest after missing a low backhand volley, clearly in discomfort. After being assisted to his chair and briefly leaving the court for medical attention, Dimitrov returned only to offer a handshake to Sinner, signaling his retirement from the match.

Dimitrov Reflects on Painful Exit and Support From Fans

Dimitrov’s run at SW19 had been a refreshing sight for fans who’ve watched the veteran struggle with injuries in recent Slams. Wins over Sebastian Ofner, Corentin Moutet, and Yoshihito Nishioka had placed him among the dark horses of the tournament. Against Sinner, who himself was dealing with a nagging elbow, Dimitrov looked composed for an upset before fate intervened.

The extent of the injury became clearer through a report from Bulgarian outlet TennisKafe, which revealed that Dimitrov will miss the upcoming ATP 250 clay-court events in Bastad, Cincinnati, and Toronto. The injury, while not career-threatening, requires rest and rehabilitation, meaning fans will have to wait a little longer to see the Bulgarian back in action.

Still, Dimitrov struck an optimistic tone in his social media post: “Sometimes the heart wants to keep going… but the universe has a different plan for us,” he wrote, alongside a photo from his hospital bed. “Thank you for the overwhelming wave of love — from family, friends, fans, colleagues, to the entire tennis community… your messages have genuinely lifted me through these hard times. Thank you all. Truly. Recovery starts now. I’ll see you all soon.”

For a player who’s battled past setbacks with grace and resilience, this latest hurdle may just be another chapter in a career that continues to inspire.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
