Can the Lions and Za'Darius Smith work out a new deal?
Free agent defensive end Za’Darius Smith, who was released by the Detroit Lions on March 9, 2025, still harbors hope of returning to the Motor City in the upcoming 2025-26 NFL season. Smith, a veteran of 10 years, joined the Lions last November after he was traded by the Cleveland Browns.
At 32 years old, the Lions could be wary of re-signing Smith to a long-term deal, but handing him a one-year deal seems like a good option, especially since his experience would be vital to a roster still capable of making it to the Super Bowl.
As per USA Today Sports, Smith, who was present at the 2025 BET Awards, told them about his desire to return to the Lions organization. Despite being part of the franchise for just a few months, Smith has embraced the warmth of the Lions front office and coaching staff.

The former Raven has also enjoyed his role as a leader and an influencer to younger players on the roster during his time in Detroit.
“Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I’m there I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit.”
Unfortunately for the Lions, Smith arrived mid-season last year, but by then their star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson was already out for the season as he suffered a severe leg injury in week 5. However, Hutchinson will be back for the Lions at the start of the regular season, and if Detroit goes ahead and signs Smith, the pair could wreak havoc on opponents.

The main reason the Lions had to release Smith during the offseason was due to financial limitations. According to Lions’ general manager, Brad Holmes, who spoke to the media at the NFL’s annual spring meeting, Detroit just did not have enough resources to offer the 3-time Pro Bowler a new contract.
Holmes also stated that the team was in talks with the defensive end and were willing to resign him, but with a pay cut. However, Smith decided to pursue free agency instead. Smith’s previous contract was worth around $11.5 million annually.

The way things stand, it looks like both parties want to see Smith continue in Detroit, at least for another year, however, money is at the crux of the problem. If Smith truly wants to return, taking a pay cut seems like the only viable option.
