Memorable night at the Queen City.
For the second year running, the 2025 Charlotte Invitational gave fans an unforgettable night of tennis at the Spectrum Center. While Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys returned for another edition of the fun-filled event, they were joined by World No. 6 Taylor Fritz and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams this time around. With the Charlotte Sports Foundation being front and centre of the one night extravaganza, here’s what unfolded on Thursday night:
Well that was fun 😅👏

Reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys shrugged off a shaky start to defeat 45-year-old legend Venus Williams 7-6(2) 6-0 in the women’s singles clash. The WTA World No. 7, who is known for her supreme ball striking ability, was matched by Williams from the baseline in the opening set. But as the match went on, the 30-year-old American pulled through with relative ease.

Williams, who is currently ranked No. 575 in the world, was last seen at the 2025 US Open in New York City. She lost in the Round of 128 to former Roland Garros runner-up Karolina Muchova. After the first set on Thursday, Williams said “I think she’s taking it easy on me, please keep that up,” during an on-court interview. Since then, she failed to win a game as Keys ran away with the encounter.
In another entertaining duel, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz left the crowd wanting more by playing out a thrilling contest. While Fritz remains the American No. 1 at the moment, a poor 2025 campaign saw ‘Big Foe’ slip to fifth in the men’s rankings within the country. Yet, he managed to upset the odds in this exhibition match-up to win 4-6 6-4 10-8.

The encounter was filled with captivating extended rallies, dominated by the forehand of both players. At one point, they even invited young fans to hit some balls with them. In the end, a missed overhead smash from deep in the ad court by 28-year-old Fritz saw Tiafoe being crowned the king of the Charlotte Invitational for the second consecutive season.
