‘Their Wins Have No Merit’ – Former NFL Safety Calls the Packers an Average Team, Lacking Consistency and Leadership!

Devavrat Kulkarni

Despite 5 wins from 8 games, the Packers haven't been consistent this season

Just before the start of the 2025-26 NFL season, days away from the season opener, the Green Bay Packers surprised the entire NFL community by trading for former Cowboy Micah Parsons.

That massive addition to the Packers’ D-line was a major boost for the defense, while the offense was expected to thrive with Jordan Love under center and multiple pass catchers at his disposal.

With a 5-2-1 record, the Packers are currently atop the NFC North with the Detroit Lions right on their heels. However, despite their record and standing in the division, Green Bay has not looked convincing week in and week out.

TJ Ward Calls the Packers an Average NFC Team

NFL analyst Kay Adams recently discussed the Packers with former NFL safety TJ Ward on her ‘Up & Adams’ podcast. Adams mentioned that she likes this Green Bay team, but feels like there is something missing in terms of their consistency.

Ward, on the other hand, was more blunt as he said that the Packers have proved him right when he felt at the start of the season that they were just an average NFC team with occasional good wins.

Ward then went on to explain that the team just doesn’t have the belief that they can win every week, and that is the main reason why we are seeing the Packers play well on some weeks, while other weeks they are extremely flat.

“I didn’t have them in my top five NFC”, said Ward. “Their wins have no merit. They are who I thought they were. An average NFC team that looks good on occasions. I think they just don’t have the confidence to win every week. You know, sometimes they come into the game and they have belief that they’re going to win and other times they don’t.”

There is a pretty good example of what Ward was alluding to if we take a look at the Packers’ games this season. Green Bay started the season with an emphatic statement win over the Lions, but since then, their only other quality win came in Week 7 against the Steelers.

What is even shocking is the fact that the Packers’ two losses have come against teams they should have defeated easily. Their first loss came against the Browns in a low-scoring game that ended 13-10, while their second loss came last week against the Panthers in another low-scoring game, ending 16-13.

Where Does the Problem Lie with the Packers?

Ward believes that the main concern for the Packers is that the team doesn’t possess the killer instinct to go out there and end the games. Green Bay clearly has the talent to win against any team on any given day; that much is evident from their wins over the likes of the Lions and Steelers, but their approach to the games is holding them back.

The former NFL safety feels that this is a leadership problem, and the top guys in the locker room, such as Jordan Love, Micah Parsons, and other leaders, need to address it along with the head coach, Matt LaFleur. As the head coach, LaFleur needs to find ways to motivate his players and bring back the spark.

Looking ahead, the Green Bay Packers have plenty of tough games on their schedule, including five divisional clashes, as well as games against the Eagles, Broncos, and Ravens. Things can change very quickly in the NFC North if the Packers continue to be inconsistent on a weekly basis.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
