NFL Analyst Believes the Indianapolis Colts Secondary Is Built to Beat Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes with Latest Sauce Gardner Addition!

Devavrat Kulkarni

The Colts are going all out this season!

The Indianapolis Colts are off to a flying start this season. Their 7-2 record is tied with the Broncos and the Patriots for the best record in the league. The offense is brimming with confidence, while the defense has done a decent job thus far.

The primary focus of the Colts’ current season has been the resurgence of quarterback Daniel Jones’ career and the exceptional run game from Jonathan Taylor. Having had a terrible start to his professional career with the New York Giants, Jones is having a breakout year and is one of the leading signal callers in most categories this season

Jonathan Taylor is the top running back in the game this season, which is certainly a welcome boost to the Colts’ offense. That said, Indy’s latest trade for cornerback Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner was the biggest trade to go down in the middle of the season.

Dan Orlovsky Believes Sauce Gardner Is a Key Addition to the Colts Secondary

Before analyzing what Sauce Gardner’s addition to the Colts’ defense brings to the team, it is worth noting that the 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has not performed up to expectations over the past year or so.

Even though he is still one of the top players at his position today, he played at a higher level in his first couple of seasons in the league. But if he can get back to his earlier self, there is a great chance that the Colts’ secondary can turn into an excellent one.

Former NFL quarterback turned analyst Dan Orlovsky feels that the Colts’ secondary now has the potential to become the best secondary in the AFC, and is built with the goal of defeating Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs.

What Makes Allen and Mahomes a Threat?

Those who are even casual fans of the game are well aware of the fact that Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes are two of the finest quarterbacks this league has ever seen. While both signal callers bring various skills to the table, their arms do most of the talking on the field.

The aerial threat both these players possess is second to none, and combine that with their abilities to scramble, extend plays, and find open receivers, and it makes this duo extremely tough to play against.

But, with a secondary now led by Sauce Gardner, the Colts have the chance to combat this threat in the event Indianapolis meets either or both teams in the postseason.

At the moment, the Colts already have a secondary with Cam Bynum, Kenny Moore, and Mekhi Blackmon, who are all quality players at their respective positions. They also have another top corner in Charvarius Ward, who is expected to return from injury soon. Ward, paired with Gardner, will surely be an elite duo on defense for the Colts.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
