Fernando Alonso Doesn’t Want F1 to Lose Barcelona!

The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix is going to be a crucial race for the Barcelona circuit. The track is set to host F1 races until the 2026 season. The arrival of a new Formula 1 circuit in Madrid is making F1 fans worry about the famed circuit. Formula 1 are accustomed the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya.

The track is also a team favorite. Formula 1 teams spend hours around Barcelona during testing. The track has been hosting F1 races since the 1980s. The newest F1 circuit in Madrid has a contract until 2035. Due to these implications, fans think that the 2026 Spanish GP is going to be Barcelona’s last Formula 1 race.

The tensions are high in the paddock this week with regards to the future of the race. At such a moment, fan favorite and home hero, Fernando Alonso shares his opinion about the track and its stay in Formula 1. The Aston Martin ace is yet to score a single point in the season but he had a good time in Monaco with Newey.

Fernando Alonso Wants Formula 1 to Continue with Barcelona

Fernando Alonso has won the Spanish GP twice in Barcelona. In his opinion, he thinks that Barcelona is an important circuit for Formula 1. Alonso quoted the fact that F1 is introducing many new circuits recently. He stressed on the importance of keeping traditional circuits alive in Formula 1.

“The teams chose Barcelona because it’s the Formula 1 track in a way. I think the circuit has made some changes to make it up to Formula 1 standards. So in the last two or three years, all the paddock facilities, the grandstands, everything has taken a new level. And Barcelona has been here for the last two or three decades, and Barcelona will be here for the next 10, 20, 30, 40 years.”

While F1 likely tries to keep circuits alive in order to appeal to the fanbase of the home drivers, things are grim for Barcelona. Imola GP is also an uncertain race in the future. Formula 1 is not going to be as keen in hosting two races in Spain. Furthermore, F1 has appointed Carlos Sainz as the ambassador for Madrid’s F1 circuit. The general direction of F1 seems to be clear in Spain.

Even though Alonso has a lot of confidence in the classic circuit of Barcelona. The competition between the two circuits of Spain might just rule out traditional track from Formula 1 racing. Barcelona is indeed an important track to Formula 1 for testing purposes. The track’s future remains unsure and only time will tell if F1 extends its contract.
