Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has returned to London after withdrawing from Argentina’s international camp. Reportedly, there’s been some swelling in his right knee which forced the move. The 24-year-old was ruled out of the Albiceleste’s upcoming friendly against Puerto Rico.
The national team confirmed that he has been diagnosed with synovitis. It’s a kind of inflammation in the knee joint. Fernandez started Argentina’s first match of the month on Saturday against Venezuela. The decision followed that clash in which Argentina won by a 1-0 margin.

Reportedly, the Blues star made more passes than any other player in that match before being replaced by Alexis Mac Allister. Despite the issue, Argentina’s statement suggested that the midfielder was likely to be rested for the Puerto Rico game regardless of his fitness.
Fernandez’s departure from the Argentina camp means he will now undergo medical assessments at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground. It will be done before their Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest next Saturday.

According to Sky Sports, the midfielder has featured more than any other outfield player under Enzo Maresca this season. He has amassed 860 minutes across 10 starts in all competitions. His absence would come as another blow for Maresca.
Especially considering he is already missing several key players, including Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, and Cole Palmer. Chelsea currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, with 11 points from seven games. They face a busy run of fixtures including Ajax in the Champions League and Sunderland at home later this month.

Speaking last month about Fernandez’s influence, Maresca told The Guardian, “Enzo can play in different positions for us, he can play as a six or as an attacking midfielder… Enzo, for us, is an important player and we try to use him as much as we can.”
Having started every Premier League game this season, Fernandez’s workload has been immense. He has also scored three goals and assisted once. Whether this knee inflammation sidelines him or serves as a brief rest could prove decisive as Chelsea navigate a demanding stretch of fixtures in late October.
