Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has been sent home from France’s training camp. He failed to recover from a thigh injury that he sustained during the Reds’ last Premier League defeat to Chelsea. The 26-year-old left the field limping in the second half at Stamford Bridge.
Even so, he had joined up with Didier Deschamps’ squad. However, it seems he was unable to complete his recovery in time to feature in their two World Cup qualifiers games. The France Football Federation confirmed the news on Saturday.

They mentioned that Konate had been “injured in the right quadriceps during his last match with Liverpool” and had “followed a treatment and protocol since his arrival on Monday. They stated that he will not be able to take his place against Iceland.” As a result, Marseille’s Benjamin Pavard has been called up as his replacement.
Konate remained an unused substitute during France’s 3-0 win against Azerbaijan. That seemed to be his only contribution this time around as he has officially been released back to Liverpool for further assessment. The decision was made jointly by Deschamps and team doctor Franck Le Gall after consulting with the player.

The timing of Konate’s withdrawal is a growing concern for manager Arne Slot. The Reds manager could face a central defensive shortage ahead of a key stretch of fixtures. Liverpool will return to Premier League action with a clash against Manchester United on October 19.
It will be followed by a Champions League meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt. Slot had voiced concern immediately after Konate’s injury. He said, “I don’t know if it is a big injury, but he said he felt his quad a little bit… For me, all alarm bells go off because in another sprint you never know if that is going to go good.”

Konate’s absence could see Joe Gomez partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence. Although, notably, Gomez himself has struggled with fitness issues. Ryan Gravenberch filled in for Konate against Chelsea. He may again need to be called upon as an emergency option.
Liverpool are already without young centre-back Giovanni Leoni, who has been sidelined for the season with an ACL injury. Meanwhile Wataru Endo also withdrew from Japan duty due to a separate problem. With Manchester United’s visit looming, Slot’s defensive puzzle just became more complicated.
