End of the Road for Ange? Tottenham’s Slide Under Postecoglou Deepens

Tottenham Hotspur’s promising early season spark under Ange Postecoglou now feels like a distant memory. Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat against Chelsea has pushed Spurs further down the Premier League table and thrown Postecoglou’s future into serious doubt. Enzo Fernandez’s second-half header sealed the win for Chelsea and condemned Tottenham to 14th place in the Premier League, 10 points adrift of the top 10.

Notably, Postecoglou has now become the first Tottenham manager to lose his first four matches against Chelsea. With just eight games remaining, Spurs are looking at their worst Premier League campaign in history. Unless they can spark a dramatic turnaround, they are on course to finish outside the top 10 for the first time in 17 years.

Following the match against Chelsea, Postecoglou appeared more isolated than ever as pressure mounts on the Australian following yet another disappointing result. There were chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” from the Tottenham supporters after Postecoglou substituted Lucas Bergvall for Pape Sarr in the 65th minute.

Remarkably, just four minutes later, Pape Sarr unleashed a stunning long-range effort that found the back of the net, leading Postecoglou to cup his ear and turn to the Tottenham fans. However, the goal was later ruled out by VAR for a foul on Moises Caicedo in the build-up.

Pressure Mounts on Postecoglou

Postecoglou, who took charge in June 2023, is without a win in his last four league games. Postecoglou has managed to collect just 44 points from his last 39 Premier League games in charge, a worrying run that dates back to the back end of last season. With 16 defeats in 30 matches, Spurs’ loss percentage this season is 53%.

As a result of Tottenham’s poor form, the Australian is now under mounting pressure at Tottenham, with several big names already being linked as potential successors. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank have all reportedly emerged as contenders for the job.

Spurs are likely to hold off on any major decisions until the conclusion of their Europa League campaign, a competition that not only presents a long-awaited opportunity for silverware but also a potential route into next season’s Champions League. Tottenham host Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their quarter-final clash next Thursday. Meanwhile, Spurs are next in Premier League action against Southampton on Sunday.
