Ange Postecoglou Lashes Out at VAR and Reporter After Tottenham Hotspurs’ Controversial Defeat to Chelsea

Ange Postecoglou was booed by Tottenham Supporters as he made his subs against Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur Manager Ange Postecoglou’s year has gone from bad to worse in the final half of the season. Losing his fourth straight game to Chelsea on Thursday, the Australian manager had quite a heated afternoon at the Stamford Bridge.

As the Blues clinched a 1-0 victory against Spurs, Postecoglou was involved with drama in the contest. VAR playing its role ruled out two goals in the game, one for each side. Pape Matar Sarr who was subbed in for Lucas Bergvall saw his goal being disallowed after a long discussion.

Ange Postecoglou Was Seen Cupping His Ear At The Tottenham Supporters

Posteocglou’s decision to substitute Bergvall with Sarr was questioned by the away supporters. Booing his switch, the Spurs fans made their disagreement clear. Tottenham fans chanted “You don’t know what you’re doing” to manager Postecoglou after he made his subs at Chelsea.

While Sarr went on to score at least what they thought at the time, Postecoglou was surprisingly seen cupping his ear towards Tottenham Hotspur’s supporter. As the goal was disallowed by VAR following a long analysis, Postecoglou’s actions remained.

When asked about the cupping his ear incident, Postecoglou insisted on being misunderstood as he said

“Jesus mate, it’s incredible how things get interpreted. We’d just scored, I just wanted to hear them cheer.”

Sarr’s goal was ruled out because of his foul on Moises Caicedo in the build-up. While the verdict took a significant amount of time, Postecoglou was left fuming given the momentum.

Postecoglou Claimed VAR is Killing the Game

When asked about the VAR decision, The 59-year-old also seemed to have a fuming tone as he complained about the technology. Referring to how its different outcomes with different referee’ he ranted at the Sky Sports reporter as he said:

“It’s killing the game, mate. It’s not the same game as it used to be”.

“We all sat on our couches last night, watched TV [Liverpool vs Everton], and I guarantee if Jared Gilett was a VAR last night, we would have got a different outcome. So you just don’t know what you’re going to get.”

“The referee gave it and then needed six minutes to rule the goal out. It’s crazy mate. It’s madness”.

Postecoglou went ahead and also insisted that the game will soon be managed by Artificial Intelligence. Expressing how the game would be out of life in this course, Postecoglou added:

“It’s going to be refereed by AI soon. That’ll spread to the players soon, a game somehow with no participants. Referees aren’t refereeing… when VAR came in, did anyone want these, microscopic decisions… I don’t like it, mate, I never have.”

Postecoglou who took over Tottenham in 2023 has struggled to prove his worth in recent months. With his future in question at the club, such incidents could imply that the pressure is getting at him.
