Enzo Fernandez Fires Chelsea Into Fourth As Blues Edge Closer to Champions League Return

Chelsea reclaimed fourth place in the Premier League on Thursday night, courtesy of Enzo Fernandez’s powerful second-half header that secured a 1-0 victory over Tottenham. The crucial win served as the perfect response to Manchester City and Newcastle United’s wins on Wednesday, which had briefly pushed the Blues down to sixth position. With the victory over Spurs, Chelsea now sit one point above fifth-placed City and two ahead of Newcastle in the race for Champions League qualification.

With eight matches remaining and Premier League expected to have five Champions League spots next season, the Blues are well-positioned in the race for Europe.

It was a deserved victory for Chelsea as they dominated proceedings throught the match. The Blues nearly took the lead in the opening minute when Micky van de Ven inadvertently struck his own post. Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario kept his side in the game with a brilliant save to deny Jadon Sancho just before half-time.

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez broke the deadlock at Stamford Bridge, getting in between defenders to head in a pinpoint cross from Cole Palmer in the 50th minute. Palmer ended a near three-month wait for a Premier League goal involvement wth his assist to Fernandez.

The Blues believed they had doubled their advantage shortly after Fernandez’s goal when Moises Caicedo smashed a beautiful volley into the net. However, VAR intervened and ruled it out due to Levi Colwill being offside in the buildup.

There was more drama in the match when Tottenham thought they had found an equaliser through substitute Pape Matar Sarr’s powerful strike from long range. However, their joy was short-lived. After being advised by VAR, referee Craig Pawson reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and overturned the goal, ruling that Sarr had fouled Moises Caicedo in the buildup before taking his shot.

Tottenham’s defeat added to the mounting pressure on head coach Ange Postecoglou, with his team stuck in 14th place and now looking likely to finish outside the Premier League’s top 10 for the first time since 2008.
