Despite Mounting Pressure, Browns HC Kevin Stefanski Reaffirms Team Will Stick with Dillon Gabriel under Center!

There is growing discontent over the Browns starting Dillon Gabriel ahead of Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland!

In the Week 10 matchup on Sunday, the 2-6 Cleveland Browns took on the 1-7 New York Jets. With both teams struggling to gain any momentum this season, yesterday was a great chance for the Browns to win their third game of the year, but that was not to be as they lost 27-20 and moved to 2-7.

Following the game, Browns’ head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about whether or not the recent loss would see any change under center as the season progresses.

Browns Will Continue with Dillon Gabriel at QB

Despite the Browns losing yet another game, in which quarterback Dillon Gabriel had nothing more than a decent outing, head coach Kevin Stefanski remained adamant that the team would rally behind their starting quarterback.

Acknowledging the fact that Gabriel is still a rookie and that his progress will take time, Stefanski also alluded to the fact that they have to play better as an offense and coach better as well.

“We’re gonna stick with Dillon,” Stefanski told the media after the game. “Obviously, this is a young player, you’re always trying to get one game better and those types of things. We have to play better as an offense, we have to coach better, all of the above.”

With fifth-round rookie and fan favorite Shedeur Sanders still waiting in the wings, there is plenty of pressure on Stefanski and the Browns to make the switch as each game passes by. Sanders is considered by many to be the superior quarterback to Gabriel, but those pulling the strings in Cleveland do not seem to see it the same way.

Gabriel in His Rookie Season

Although statistics-wise, Gabriel was not horrible for the Browns against the Jets, there were multiple plays where he missed open receivers and took sacks, which he shouldn’t have. He finished the game completing just 17 of 32 pass attempts for 167 yards with 2 touchdowns and no picks.

However, over the course of the season, the third-round rookie signal caller has started 5 games for the Browns, in which he has just one win. In those 5 games, Gabriel has thrown for 850 yards with a completion percentage under 60% (58.6%), and has 7 touchdowns against 2 interceptions, for a passer rating of 80.4.

The main issue at hand is that Browns fans know they have a potentially better player at the position waiting in the wings, and Gabriel continues to struggle in each game. The expectation is that Shedeur Sanders will take up the starting role this season, but for now, Stefanski is clear that he is sticking with Gabriel at least for one more week.

Next up for the Browns is a Week 11 meeting with NFC North divisional opponents, the Baltimore Ravens.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
